When you work at Telecare, you help to empower thousands of individuals every day in their journeys of recovery.Telecare's Carmen Lane is a 12 bed Crisis Residential Treatment Center with a forensic focus located in Santa Maria, California. This program serves adult residents of Santa Barbara County with justice-involved backgrounds who require crisis support to avoid hospitalization, incarceration, or both. Residents may be discharging from a hospital, forensic facility, or long-term locked facility and need step-down care to transition to community living. The program will provide recovery-focused learning environment where residents have opportunity to improve symptom self-management, community living and interpersonal skills, and make lasting connections to family and community supports.Employment Status: On-CallShift: Varies as neededDays: Varies as neededPOSITION SUMMARYThe Peer Recovery Coach I engages, inspires, and facilitates meaningful conversations with members served that assist the members to explore, create, and meet their own recovery goals. Peer Recovery Coaches provide consultation to the team to promote and reinforce Telecare's Recovery Culture as defined by the Telecare Recovery Centered Clinical System (RCCS) in which each member's point of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected, and integrated into services and self-help programming. Additionally, Peer Recovery Coaches respond to critical situations with high-level engagement and de-escalation skills which support a least restrictive environment for members served experiencing an emergency related to a mental health/addiction challenge.QUALIFICATIONSRequired:High School Diploma or GED requiredCertified Peer Specialist and/or completed Peer Support TrainingOne (1) year or part-time equivalent of experience supporting members served with behavioral health challengesExperience as a beneficiary of the public Behavioral Health system of careSuccessful completion of Peer Support Training or Peer Employment Training.Must be at least 18 years of ageMust be CPR, Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), and First Aid certified on date of employment or within 60 days of employment and maintain current certification throughout employmentAll opportunities at Telecare are contingent upon successful completion and receipt of acceptable results of the applicable post-offer physical examination, 2-step PPD test for tuberculosis, acceptable criminal background clearances, excluded party sanctions, and degree or license verification. Position requires driving, valid driver's license, a motor vehicle clearance and proof of auto insurance is required at time of employment and must be maintained throughout employment. Additional regulatory, contractual, or local requirements may applyPreferred:Demonstrated ability to perform at a consistently high level as a support worker in a healthcare fieldBilingual/Bicultural a plusIn San Diego County, Bachelor's degree preferredESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSDemonstrates the Telecare mission, purpose, values and beliefs in everyday language and contact with internal and external stakeholdersDraws upon own personal recovery experience with mental/addiction challenges as a basis for engagement as a peer with members served and to validate members' own lived experiencesConsistently utilizes recovery language and a strength-based approach to assist members served to reach their fullest potentialParticipates in the planning, organization and co-facilitation of Recovery Centered Clinical Service (RCCS) materials, self-help and recovery education groupsProvides education and expertise from the perspective of a person with lived experience of mental illness to the team concerning various mental health/addiction recovery experiencesTravels locally to provide outreach to members served in the communityParticipates in verbal de-escalation and physical interventions in emergent situations and is willing and able to assist other staff as needed to maintain a safe, healing environment for allMust assist with restraint of members served in the event of assaultive behavior and pass assault crisis/crisis prevention trainingDuties and responsibilities may be added, deleted and/or changed at the discretion of management.Position requires transporting Members in own personal vehicle and program van (acceptable driving record and vehicle inspection for safety). Position requires driving for company business such as trainings, offsite meetings, etc.SKILLSKnowledge of recovery focused, strengths based work in mental health/addiction recoveryBe willing to seek to understand members' unique circumstances, personal preferences and goals and incorporate them into daily work as well as any needed crisis response to help the member regain a sense of controlHave a strong understanding of recovery and resilience, the value of partnerships with members and member choice, and the balance between protection from harm and personal dignityStrong knowledge of relevant community resources and methods for accessing themPHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.The employee is occasionally required to stand, twist, squat, kneel and lift and carry items weighing 25 pounds or less as well as to frequently sit, walk, reach, bend and do simple and power grasping.
